One of the sweetest milestones to photograph? A first birthday cake smash. There’s joy, discovery, and a little frosting chaos…what’s not to love?
Recently, I had the absolute joy of capturing Mia’s one-year session with the most adorable bee-themed cake smash setup right here in my Yucaipa studio, just a short drive from Beaumont, CA. From the “Sweet as Honey” sign to the golden honeycomb backdrop, every detail was buzzing with charm.
Mia wore the cutest neutral-toned dress with delicate bows, and her little party hat—with tiny bees dancing across it…was the cherry on top. At first, she wasn’t quite sure about the cake in front of her. But that hesitation didn’t last long. With one curious lick, her eyes lit up and it was game on!
She smashed, smeared, and taste-tested like a pro—frosting on her fingers, toes, and just about everywhere in between. The result? The most heart-melting expressions and a gallery full of sticky, giggly magic.
Behind the scenes, mom and dad were cheering her on, laughing along as she explored her cake-covered world. These are the moments that become family stories—the ones retold with love as the years go on.
After all the smashing fun, we moved to cleanup time (aka splash time!). Mia got cozy in a warm tub and happily splashed the frosting away. Clean, content, and surrounded by love, we ended the session with snuggly family portraits—timeless memories of a first birthday well celebrated.
Overall, this cake smash photo session was a blast! It’s always such a joy to watch little ones explore something new with wide eyes, frosting-covered fingers, and plenty of giggles. I’m so grateful I had the chance to capture these sweet moments for Mia and her family.
