5 Stages of Pregnancy You Never Knew Existed From a Maternity Photographer

Did you know there is more to pregnancy than the typical three trimesters? Today I am sharing everything you can expect from conception all the way to the mysterious “4th trimester.” We will walk through each stage, plus I will share local Redlands resources that can support you in pregnancy, birth, and those early newborn days.

First Trimester: The Secret Life of Pregnancy

The first trimester is like a secret club where only you and your growing baby are members. During these first 12 weeks, your body is working overtime to create new life, and you might be feeling every bit of it (hello, morning sickness).

When I was in this stage, I remember sneaking crackers into my desk drawer at work and sipping ginger tea between meetings just to survive the day. I did not have a visible bump yet, so it felt like I was living a double life as a superhero without the cape.

Local Redlands Resource Tip: If you are struggling with nausea, the Redlands Acupuncture Clinic offers pregnancy-safe treatments that some moms swear by. You can also find high-quality prenatal vitamins and ginger supplements at Clark’s Nutrition & Natural Foods Market.

Second Trimester: The Golden Age

For many, the second trimester is the golden age of pregnancy. The nausea eases, your energy comes back, and your bump starts showing. It is the perfect time to start enjoying the journey.

When I was expecting my second, we made the announcement at Caroline Park during golden hour, with my older child holding a “big brother” sign. Those photos are still some of my favorites.

Where to Shop Locally: If you want maternity clothes that are stylish and comfortable, check out The Frugal Frigate in downtown Redlands for cozy finds, or PinkBlush Maternity online for trendy options shipped right to your door.

Stay Active: For gentle movement, prenatal yoga at Inner Evolution Yoga can help with flexibility and stress relief.

Third Trimester: The Home Stretch

The third trimester is when it all starts to feel very real. Your calendar fills with doctor visits, your feet might swell, and your mind is busy planning for the baby’s arrival.

For our nursery, we painted the walls a calming sage green and had everything set up months before the due date. I have also had clients tell me they did not start on the nursery until their baby was three months old, and that is okay too.

Local Redlands Resource Tip: If you are looking for extra birth support, Inland Empire Doula Collective offers both in-person and virtual services. You can also take a local birth class through Redlands Community Hospital’s Family Birth Center.

Birth: The Main Event

This is it, the day you have been waiting for. Whether your birth plan involves a hospital, birth center, or home, nothing compares to the moment you finally meet your baby.

When my daughter was born, I remember the first time I heard her cry. It was the most grounding, emotional moment. Everything else faded away.

Lactation Support in Redlands: Breastfeeding Center Inland Empire is a wonderful resource if you need guidance in those first few days and weeks.

And if you have ever considered it, I can tell you that hiring a birth photographer is something no one regrets. These moments pass quickly, and having professional images means you can relive them without the blur of exhaustion.

The 4th Trimester: What No One Tells You

Your journey does not end after birth. The 4th trimester, your baby’s first three months, is a time of huge adjustment for both you and your little one.

For me, the emotional side of postpartum was the biggest surprise. Even though I had support, I still faced moments of overwhelm. Talking openly about it and joining a mom group made all the difference.

Local Redlands Resource Tip: The Redlands Moms of Multiples & More Support Group is open to all new moms and offers connection, encouragement, and a safe place to share your experiences.

If you are breastfeeding, do not wait until you are frustrated. Reach out for help early. Our local lactation consultants are just a phone call away.
