Dress to Impress: What to Wear for Unforgettable Family Photos

Booking family photos can be a little nerve wracking. I’m sure some of the first few questions that runs through your head are “where will we go?” “what will we wear?” “will my kids behave long enough to get good photos?” and I’m here to help answer some of those questions, starting off with my favorite tips and tricks about what to wear!

  • Consider the Location:
Before picking out your outfits, take into account the location and theme of the photo session. Will it be outdoors or in-studio? Adjust your clothing choices accordingly to ensure they complement the setting and enhance the overall aesthetic.
  • Coordinate Colors and Patterns:
Coordinating colors among family members adds a harmonious touch to your photos. Choose a color palette that complements each other and the surroundings. Avoid being too matchy-matchy, but rather aim for outfits that blend well together. Mix solids, patterns, and textures to add depth and visual interest. Start with Mom’s outfit and build the rest of the family around that.

  • Dressing for Body Types:
Everyone’s body is unique, and selecting outfits that flatter each family member is essential. Consider different body shapes and choose styles that highlight their best features. Opt for clothing that provides comfort and confidence, allowing your family’s personalities to shine through.

  • Dressing for Age Groups:
Outfit choices vary depending on the age of family members. For infants and toddlers, opt for comfortable yet adorable outfits that reflect their personalities. For children and teens, select stylish and age-appropriate attire that showcases their individuality. Parents and older family members should choose outfits that align with the overall family aesthetic while considering their own personal style.
  • Pay Attention to Details:
Accessories can elevate a family’s attire, but be mindful not to overdo it. Consider adding a statement piece or coordinating accessories that tie the looks together. Pay attention to hair, makeup, and grooming to ensure everyone looks their best. Don’t forget about footwear – choose shoes that are not only stylish but also comfortable for the location and terrain.

  • Considering Simple Style:
While it can be tempting to follow the latest trends, aim for simple style in your family photos. Classic pieces withstand the test of time and won’t make your photos feel outdated. Opt for clothing that reflects your family’s personality but doesn’t overshadow the importance of the moment captured.
  • Tips for a Cohesive Look:
To achieve a cohesive look, communicate and coordinate with your family members. Create a mood board or inspiration collage (you can look through some of my previous galleries and Pinterest for this) to share your vision and gather feedback. If needed, I’m available to help choose outfits that will translate beautifully on camera.

  • Final Preparations:
Prepare for the photo session by choosing outfits well in advance. Try them on and make any necessary adjustments to ensure the perfect fit. Pack any additional items you may need, such as extra accessories or layers, to accommodate changing weather conditions or different poses.

When it comes to family photos, choosing the right outfits will change the entire look of the final photos. By considering the location, coordinating colors, dressing for body types and age groups, paying attention to details, and aiming for timeless style, you’ll create stunning, cohesive, and unforgettable family portraits. So, embrace the process, have fun, and get ready to capture beautiful memories that will be cherished for a lifetime.
