Signs Labor Is Near: What to Expect in the Final Weeks

If you’re searching for signs labor is near, chances are you’re checking every cramp, every twinge, and every trip to the bathroom wondering, “Is this it?”

I remember feeling exactly the same way during my pregnancies. As a mom of two, I spent those final weeks analyzing every little change in my body. And now, as a Yucaipa newborn photographer, I hear similar stories from so many expectant moms. They tell me they’re excited, nervous, uncomfortable, and more than ready to meet their baby. If you feel the same way, you may also enjoy reading Hardest Week of Pregnancy: What Moms Should Expect, where I share some of the most common challenges moms face during the final weeks before labor begins.

The truth is that the final weeks of pregnancy can feel like a waiting game. Your body is working hard behind the scenes, preparing for labor and delivery. Some women experience several signs before labor begins, while others seem to go from feeling normal to holding their baby in what feels like a matter of hours.

If you’re approaching your due date, understanding the common signs labor is near can help you feel more prepared for what’s ahead.

Why the Final Weeks of Pregnancy Feel So Different

As you move through the last weeks of pregnancy, your body begins making subtle changes that help prepare for birth.

Your hormones shift.

Baby settles into position.

And your cervix begins preparing for labor.

At the same time, you may notice new symptoms that leave you wondering if labor is days away or still weeks away.

One thing I always remind moms is that every pregnancy is different. Some women experience nearly every sign on the list, while others experience only a few. Neither experience is more “normal” than the other.

As your due date approaches, your body begins preparing for labor in ways that can feel both exciting and overwhelming.

Between increased pelvic pressure, Braxton Hicks contractions, and frequent trips to the bathroom, comfort often becomes harder to find. During this stage, many moms start reaching for clothing that accommodates a growing bump while helping them feel comfortable and confident. Common Signs Labor Is Near

Your Baby Drops Lower

One of the earliest signs labor is near is called lightening, or when your baby drops lower into your pelvis. Many women notice they can breathe a little easier because the baby is no longer pressing as much against their lungs. However, that relief often comes with increased pelvic pressure and more frequent trips to the bathroom.

Increased Pelvic Pressure

As your baby moves lower, you may feel heavier or experience increased pressure in your lower abdomen and pelvis. Some women describe it as feeling like the baby could fall out at any moment, even though that’s definitely not how birth works. Increased pelvic pressure is one of the common ways your body signals that labor may be getting closer.

Braxton Hicks Contractions Become More Noticeable

Many moms experience Braxton Hicks contractions throughout pregnancy, but they often become stronger and more frequent in the final weeks.

Unlike true labor contractions, Braxton Hicks are usually irregular and may stop when you change positions, rest, or drink water. True labor contractions gradually become stronger, longer, and closer together.

Loss of the Mucus Plug

One sign that often gets a lot of attention is losing the mucus plug.

During pregnancy, the mucus plug helps protect your baby by sealing the cervix. As your cervix begins softening and opening, the plug may come out all at once or gradually over several days. While losing it is a sign your body is preparing for labor, it doesn’t necessarily mean labor will begin immediately. For some women, labor starts within days. For others, it may still be weeks away.

Changes in Vaginal Discharge

Many women notice increased vaginal discharge during the final weeks of pregnancy. As the cervix softens and thins, additional mucus may be released. You may notice discharge that is clear, pink, or slightly blood-tinged. This can be a normal sign that your body is preparing for labor.

The Nesting Instinct Kicks In

Have you suddenly found yourself reorganizing closets, washing baby clothes, and deep cleaning your kitchen at 10 p.m.?

You’re not alone.

Many women experience a burst of energy known as nesting before labor begins. While nesting isn’t a guarantee that labor will start tomorrow, it’s a common experience during the final days and weeks before delivery.
