5 Senior Photo Prep Mistakes to Avoid: A Guide for Parents and Seniors

There is a lot to think about before senior pictures, and worrying about senior photo prep mistakes can make the whole process feel a little overwhelming. What should you wear? Should you get your hair done? What do you need to bring? And what if you have absolutely no idea what to do once you’re in front of the camera?

The good news is that getting ready for your senior session really doesn’t need to be stressful. You don’t need to have everything perfect.

A little planning ahead can make the day feel so much easier, and part of my job is helping you through the process too. Here are five common mistakes I recommend avoiding before your Yucaipa senior session, along with what to do instead.

1. Making Big Changes Right Before Your Senior Photos

Trying a completely new look right before your session.

I know how tempting it can be to schedule a dramatic haircut, try a new hair color, get a spray tan, or book a new skincare treatment because you want to look your best for senior pictures.

The problem is that if you don’t love the result, you may spend your whole session thinking about it.

Do this instead: Stick pretty close to what already makes you feel like yourself.

If you’re planning a haircut or color, give yourself enough time before your session to get used to it. The same goes for spray tans, facials, and other beauty appointments.

And don’t forget about the Southern California sun. Be extra careful about sunscreen leading up to your session so you’re not dealing with an unexpected sunburn or tan lines.

You don’t need to look like a different version of yourself for senior pictures. I want you to look back at these photos and recognize exactly who you were during your senior year.

2. Choosing an Outfit You Can’t Actually Move Around In

Choosing an outfit only because it photographs well, even though you don’t feel comfortable wearing it.

This is especially important for outdoor senior sessions around Yucaipa. We may be walking along dirt paths, through fields, or moving between different areas to get a variety of photos.

An outfit can look amazing, but if you’re constantly adjusting it or worrying about your shoes, it’s going to be harder to relax.

Do this instead: Choose outfits that look good and feel like you.

Think about where we’ll be photographing and what the weather might be like. If you want to wear heels, bring comfortable shoes for walking between spots.

Pay attention to the season too. A heavy sweater might look cute in an inspiration photo, but it probably won’t feel very cute during a warm Southern California afternoon.

And if you never wear dresses, you absolutely don’t need to become a dress person just because you’re taking senior pictures.

Wear something that makes you feel confident when you put it on.

3. Bringing Too Many Outfits to Your Senior Photo Session

Packing half your closet because you want as much variety as possible.

More outfits don’t always mean more variety. Sometimes they just mean more time spent changing clothes and deciding what to wear next.

That can quickly make your session feel rushed.

Do this instead: Choose a few outfits you genuinely love.

Think about creating variety between those choices instead. You might bring one outfit that feels casual and completely everyday-you, then another that’s a little dressier.

If sports, dance, music, horses, or another hobby has been a big part of your high school years, we can also incorporate that into your session.

You don’t need ten different outfits to tell your story. A few thoughtful choices usually work much better.

4. Waiting Until the Last Minute to Get Everything Ready

Waiting until you’re about to leave to steam clothes, find jewelry, pack shoes, or decide which accessories you’re bringing.

Nobody wants to start their senior session stressed because they spent the last 20 minutes searching their bedroom for a missing earring.

Do this instead: Get everything ready the night before.

Steam or iron your outfits and put them on hangers. Gather your jewelry and accessories in one place.

Pack a small bag with anything you might need, including:

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Water
  • Hairbrush or comb
  • Lip gloss or lipstick
  • Jewelry and accessories
  • Anything special you’re incorporating into your photos

Parents, this is also a great time to help double-check that everything is packed so the next day feels a little less rushed.

The goal isn’t to prepare for every possible situation. It’s simply to make the start of your session feel calm and easy.

5. Thinking You Need to Know How to Pose for Your Senior Photos

Practicing poses in the mirror, worrying about what to do with your hands, or deciding ahead of time that you’re “not photogenic.”

This is probably one of the senior photo prep mistakes I hear seniors worry about the most.

You are not supposed to show up knowing how to model.

Do this instead: Let me guide you.

I’ll tell you where to stand, where to look, what to do with your hands, and when to move. If something doesn’t feel natural, we’ll change it.

We’ll walk, talk, and laugh.

Some of my favorite photos happen in those little moments between poses when you stop thinking so much about the camera.

Your job isn’t to know what to do.

Your job is to show up and be yourself. I’ll help with the rest.

A Few Things to Do the Week Before Your Senior Photos

You don’t need a huge preparation checklist. A few simple things can make a big difference.

Drink plenty of water, try to get a good night’s sleep before your session, and make sure your outfits and accessories are ready ahead of time.

Take a quick look at your nails too. They don’t need to be professionally done, but clean nails or a simple manicure photograph beautifully.

Then pack the little things that might come in handy, like a hairbrush, lip gloss, water, comfortable shoes, and any jewelry or accessories you’re planning to use.

That’s really it.

If you want a little more help getting everything ready, I also put together a complete senior session preparation checklist with everything you’ll want to think about before your session.

Preparing well doesn’t mean obsessing over every little detail. It just means taking care of a few things ahead of time so you can enjoy the actual experience.

Your Senior Photo Session Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect

At the end of the day, avoiding these senior photo prep mistakes isn’t about making sure every hair stays perfectly in place or planning every second of your session.

Senior pictures are supposed to be fun.

This is such a unique season of your life. You’re finishing one chapter, figuring out what’s coming next, and probably experiencing about a hundred different emotions along the way.

I want your photos to remind you of that.

So come with the outfits you love. Bring the things that mean something to you. And don’t worry about knowing how to pose or having everything figured out before you arrive.
